Delhi govt asks MCD to complete Games projects by July15

delhi Updated: Jul 03, 2010 11:24 IST

Delhi Government on Satuday has set a deadline of July 15 to MCD to complete all the projects being implemented by the civic body as part of preparations for the Commonwealth Games to be held here from October 3 to 14.

In a high-level meeting to review status of projects, Finance Minister A K Walia also directed the MCD to ensure quality and standard of work.

The MCD had earlier this week admitted that it will miss the June 30 deadline set by it for completion of Games projects and extended the same to July 31.

MCD Commissioner K S Mehra had said though the officials involved in the project have exuded confidence that all work will be completed by July 15, the deadline is being extended by 15 more days to ensure that no work remains left over.

Several top officials of the civic body attended today's meeting. Walia told the MCD to concentrate on making Delhi a "clean and green city" before commencement of the mega sporting event, the biggest in the country after the Asian Games in 1982.

With just three months left for the Games and several projects running behind schedule, a worried Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday had assigned specific tasks to her Cabinet colleagues to monitor the works and ensure their timely completion.

Walia was given the responsibility of monitoring the projects being implemented by MCD.

MCD officials told Walia that work on parking project covering Sunheri and Kushak drains near Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, the main venue of the event, is almost completed.

It will provide ample parking facility near the venue where opening and closing ceremonies of the event will take place. The MCD has also been undertaking street-scaping of all important roads leading to stadia.

The officials said MCD has also completed construction of foot overbridges near the JLN Stadium. The civic agency had also taken up construction of drainage system and road improvement projects near Chhatrasal stadium and officials said out of 12 such projects, 11 have been completed.

They informed Walia that MCD has already completed road improvement projects around prominent hotels and guest houses in Karol Bagh and Paharganj.

This includes renovation of footpath, dense carpeting, widening of lanes, construction of central verge and drainage.

The MCD officials said the civic agency has already spent Rs 912 crore in projects to develop various roads and other peripheral infrastructure.
