Elections are just three weeks away but the BJP is yet to take a final call on its candidate list. Former MLAs and ticket aspirants are both agitated and nervous as AAP and Congress candidates have a head start over them.

In contrast, in the 2013 assembly polls, the BJP’s list was announced a month before the December 4 polls, giving them enough time to prepare and campaign.

Senior BJP leaders said the party was likely to announce the names of candidates on Monday. But it is not certain if the entire list of candidates will come out or a few names would be announced. Both the AAP and Congress have released all names.

Sources said aspirants are not sure of spending money on campaigning now as there is no certainty on getting a ticket this time round. In 2013, the party had announced its candidate for the high-profile New Delhi seat on November 6 but this year it is struggling to find a suitable name.

“Every day, we hear about some meeting or the other but the final list is yet to come out. We need time to prepare for campaigning. We will have to organise corner meetings, rallies for which we need permission. Permissions are denied if sufficient time is not given,” said a senior BJP leader.

A senior BJP leader said a major reason behind the delay is that the party is not willing to take any chance and wants to field only winnable candidates.

The dilemma of whether to name the CM candidate or not is adding to the suspense. This is probably the first time ticket distribution has taken so long. New faces will have a tough time as campaigning will be a new experience for them.
