A man allegedly hacked his 12-year-old stepson to death after an argument with his wife at their home in west Delhi’s Nihal Vihar, police said on Saturday.
Police said the child’s mother had refused to go on a short trip to their native village in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district because of her son’s ongoing exams.
This had left the accused, identified as Sewa Ram, seething with anger.
On Thursday afternoon, Sewa Ram picked up a billhook and attacked his stepson, Vishwajeet, in his face. Vidya was out for some work when the crime took place.
In her statement, Vidya told police that she saw her husband holding a blood-soaked billhook when she returned home.
“Sewa Ram told her that he had eliminated the only symbol of her first husband. She rushed inside and found her son lying in a pool of blood on the bed,” said a police officer, quoting Vidya’s statement.
Vidya raised an alarm after which neighbours rushed the injured child to Safdarjung Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Sewa Ram fled the crime scene but was later caught and booked for murder.
Sewa Ram and Vidya lived with four children at a rented house in Nihal Vihar.
The husband worked as a rickshaw-puller, while Vidya is employed at a nearby factory.
Sewa Ram wanted the entire family to visit their relatives in UP. Vidya had asked him to postpone the trip to Holi because of their children’s exams.
Sewa Ram, however, was adamant on going ahead. He later offered to go with their eldest son Vishwajeet but Vidya had rejected that as well.
