Decks have now been cleared for the implementation of Delhi Metro's ambitious Phase-III project which will connect another 103 km in the capital to the network, bringing comfort to a number of unconnected areas and the busy Ring Road.
The Empowered Group of Ministers(EGoM) on urban infrastructure had Tuesday night cleared the proposal which envisages building of four new corridors at a cost of Rs 35,242 crore including central taxes.
While the Centre and Delhi governments would provide Rs 7,497 crore as equity and Rs 5,100 crore as interest-free subordinate debt for land acquisition and Central taxes, the Japan International Cooperation Agency will fund Rs 14,097 as soft loan.
The Delhi Development Authority will provide Rs 1,500 crore and the DMRC will raise Rs 1,586 crore. The remaining Rs 5462 crore will be raised through loans from financial institutions, the GoM decided on Tuesday.
Delhi Metro, which currently has a network of 190 km, has already started preliminary work like conducting geo-technical survey, soil and other mandatory tests on all the proposed corridors to save time.
Tenders for certain corridors and constructing a third bridge on the Yamuna River have already been floated. The Phase-III will kick off with the construction of a small stretch from Central Secretariat-Mandi House that is aimed at decongesting the over-crowded Rajiv Chowk station.
The Phase-III, which will be completed by 2016, will have a total of 67 stations with 15 inter-change points that will facilitate free movement of people.
As part of its preliminary work, Delhi Metro has already completed staff allocation for the Phase-III project and has also appointed project directors, Delhi Metro officials said.
Besides, the EGoM also cleared the 14-km corridor connecting Badarpur with YMCA Chowk in Faridabad at a cost of Rs 2,533 crore.
The corridors on the Phase-III are -- Mukundpur to Yamuna Vihar, Janakpuri West to Kalinidikunj, Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate and Jahangirpuri-Badli.
The Mukundpur corridor will be the longest with 56 km and 35 stations and will provide connectivity to the Northern, Western and Eastern, parts of Delhi. The line will also have the third bridge on Yamuna River.
The Janakpuri West-Munirka-Kalindikunj will cover 34 kms and the corridor will have 22 stations, providing connectivity to the Southeastern parts of Delhi with the western part of Delhi.
The route provides integration with the existing stations at Janakpuri West (Yamuna Bank to Dwarka Sec 21 Line), Hauz Khas (Jahangirpuri to HUDA City Centre Line) and Nehru Place (Central Secretariat- Badarpur corridor) enabling commuters to go to Dwarka, Gurgaon, Central Secretariat, Badarpur and Qutab Minar.

The Central Secretariat-Kashmere Gate corridor will be an extension of the Badarpur-Central Secretariat corridor. When the Faridabad corridor comes up, it will be integrated with this corridor.
The Jahangirpuri–Badli corridor will cover 4 km and will have four stations -- Jahangirpuri, Shalimar Place, Rohini Sector 18, Badli and provides connectivity to outer Ring Road, Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar and Badli enabling commuters to avail interstate buses and trains.
