The outrage over Arunachal boy Nido Tania’s alleged hate killing still simmering, Delhi witnessed fresh protests by the northeastern community on Saturday, this time over the rape of a 14-year-old girl from Manipur.
The teenager, who was visiting her aunt in south Delhi’s Munirka, was confined, beaten and raped, allegedly by the landlord’s 19-year-old son, on Friday night. The police said the accused, Ashish alias Vicky, was detained after the matter was reported and formally arrested on Saturday.
“The girl, who arrived in the city a month ago, had gone out to buy a dishwashing bar when she was intercepted by the accused at 10.30pm,” said a senior officer. “According to the complainant, Vicky struck up a conversation with her before luring her to an empty room on the ground floor of his house, where he assaulted her for around an hour before sexually exploiting her and fleeing.”
The spot isn’t far from where the December 16 rape victim boarded the bus driven by her killers.
Hundreds of protesters, mostly students from the Northeast, shouted slogans outside nearby Vasant Vihar police station on Saturday and clashed with cops. They later held a candle light march.
Condemning the incident, the Aam Aadmi Party reiterated it had no control over the police, and hence over such matters. “This shameful incident of rape again brings back the basic question: are the people and government of Delhi helpless in dealing with issues of women’s safety since the Centre, which enjoys control over the Delhi Police, continues to ignore such a serious issue?”
Ironically, AAP had earlier held the previous Sheila Dikshit government responsible for the bus gang rape and been especially critical when she pointed out that the police did not answer to the state government.
