A Motor Licence Officer (MLO) posted in northeast Delhi was allegedly attacked by four men for refusing to issue a driver’s licence without requisite documentation on Saturday morning.
Anil Chikara, who happens to be a prosecution witness in the important Burari Transport Scam case, was assaulted almost immediately after reaching the gate of his office where four assailants were lying in wait for him.
“I recognised two of the men,” said Chikara. “One of them had approached me on Friday and was forcing me to issue a licence in his name without producing proper documents. When I told him that I would not do so, he stormed off after warning me of dire consequences,” he added.
According to the police, Chikara claimed that he was cornered and assaulted by the men who, after inflicting injuries on his face fled from the scene warning onlookers against intervening.
However, the local police were informed and a police team reached the spot within minutes after which Chikara was taken to GTB Hospital for medical aid. Based on his statement, a case of hurt has been registered at the Jyoti Nagar police station.
“Local goons - including some small-time journalists and some politicians - are behind the attack,” claimed Chikara. “I have come down hard on touting and taken strict action against other illegal activities rampant here - this is the sole trigger for the attack.”
Meanwhile, 17 MLOs and 13 zonal offices in the Capital decided not to work for a day in protest of the attack on Chikara.
