In a case of suspected suicide, a 27-year-old post-graduate student of Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) hospital was found dead in his car near the doctor’s hostel within the premises on Saturday morning. A syringe and vials reportedly containing a chemical used for sedation were found near the body, police said.

According to the police, Prakash P, a resident of Chennai, was a first year student of radiology. He had joined RML hospital on May 31 after opting out of AIIMS earlier this year and was residing alone in the hostel.

On Saturday morning, a security guard spotted Prakash’s body inside his Maruti Swift car in front of the Bank of Baroda ATM within the hostel premises. Police officers who were on PCR duty nearby were alerted at 8.10am and Prakash was taken to the hospital but was declared brought dead.

Investigating officers said prima facie it appeared to be a case of suicide. According to the police report, the body bore no external injury marks, though an officer said there was an injection mark on Prakash’s left arm.

The police recovered a syringe and three vials next to the body. The vials reportedly contained propofol, a chemical is used in small doses for anesthesia and sedation.

“There was an injection mark on his left hand. He was found dead in the driver’s seat. It appears he used his right hand to inject (the chemical) and end his life. There were no signs of robbery. Apart from the three vials, we recovered his bag and a lab coat,” said an investigating officer.

The officer added that Prakash’s call data records and messages were being scanned. Sources said the radiology student had an argument with a female friend and the police were probing if it was a case of a relationship gone wrong.

Doctors said they were waiting for Prakash’s relatives to arrive from Chennai after which a post-mortem would be conducted. His elder brother who is settled in the United States has been informed, police said.
