They first said bamboo screens will spring up in the city during the commonwealth games in 2010 to hide its ugly slums. Now, they plan to go big with bamboos, and make a fashion statement with it.

From bamboo T-shirts, tracksuits and caps for athletes to uniforms for volunteers and souvenirs and gifts like pen stand, key chain, coffee mugs, the entire range. Delhi will become a bamboo city.

“It is environment friendly and goes with our agenda of promoting green games,” said Suresh Kalmadi, chairman of Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee.

“We will be using bamboo in a big way in various things – starting from souvenirs, gifts and as fabric.” The Commonwealth Games are being sold the world over as the Green Games.

The Organising Committee has already received a number of proposals from different agencies on where all bamboo can be used as a substitute, and how.

“We have already seen some presentations on how and where bamboo can be used as a green merchandise during the games. We will be finalizing the agency shortly,” said Kalmadi.

A fashion show is a possibility. With what, models walking the ramp on bamboo stilts?
