“I had seen such a car only in films. This is a different car … with no roof,” said Ishan Gambhir, a class 5 student, as he caressed the wooden steering of MG ‘Y’ Type 1949 model and enjoyed the experience of the drawn-back hood of the vintage car.

Ishan and his brother Aryan, a student of class 2, were called in specially from Gurgaon by their maternal grandfather SK Gandhi to Nizamuddin East for the ‘Ride with History’ in vintage four-wheeled beauties on Saturday.

Organised jointly by the Heritage Motoring Club of India (HMCI) and Nizamuddin East Colony Association (NECA), enthusiastic children and residents of the area enjoyed the vintage car drive through the lanes and by-lanes sprinkled with archeological monuments.

“Riding in the cars on this drive gives the children an opportunity to learn about the heritage monuments and also about the vintage cars,” said NECA president Asha Kohli.

Diljit Titus, HMCI secretary, agreed, “The rally’s purpose is to showcase the vintage beauties to children. This can create new collectors from children and overall bring about a better sense of collection.”

Area MLA Sandeep Dikshit was also present on the occasion. Senior advocate KTS Tulsi, also the HMCI president, himself drove one of the vintage classics taking a bunch of children with him on the heritage drive.

If it was fun and frolic for the youngsters, it was more than that for the proud car owners. Atul Anand’s cherry red MG ‘Y’ Type 1949 model — features in Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan hit movie Parineeta — is one of the three in India and one of 888 manufactured then.
