A second-year MBBS student of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was found hanging in his hostel room on Tuesday.
Himanshu Katara, 20, who belonged to Rajasthan and lived in room No 6 of hostel number 3 of the institute, allegedly committed suicide early in the morning. No suicide note was recovered from his room.
According to his hostel mates, Katara had returned from his home three days ago and was not his usual self since his return.“He appeared to be depressed and was mostly keeping to himself. We thought he was feeling homesick and would get better in a few days,” said one of his hostel mates.
Katara’s body was found after he did not respond to repeated knocks by friends who had come to check on him. Two of the students then went to the back of the room and peeped through the window around 11.30 am and saw him hanging from the ceiling. They informed other students and the hostel warden, security officer and the police.
“The door was then forced open by the police in the presence of AIIMS officials. The student was found hanging and the body was cold with no signs of life,” said Dr Y K Gupta, AIIMS spokesperson.
He was rushed to AIIMS casualty where he was declared brought dead. His body was sent for post-mortem which will be conducted on Wednesday morning.
The police seized Katara’s phone and are analyzing it to get clues. Katara’s family members have been informed and they were due to reach Delhi late on Tuesday evening.
This is the second incident of suicide in the last three months. In March this year, a 25-year-old first year student of MD Pharmacology at AIIMS was found dead in her hostel room allegedly by consuming poison.
