The special cell of Delhi police has claimed to have busted the Mumbai-module of a pan-India drug syndicate with the arrest of one Shahjahan Mohammad Yasin alias Karim and seized drugs worth Rs 100 crore on Saturday.

The breakthrough comes six months after Delhi police had nabbed three men — including one from Kerela — with a cache of heroin and cocaine, who were part of an international drug cartel that operated from Afghanistan with alleged help from Pakistan’s ISI.

The interrogation of the drug peddlers then had hinted towards the existence of various state modules of a pan-India drug syndicate, prompting the investigators to expand their search and probe scope.

The investigators, so far, have nabbed 14 members of the syndicate and claimed to have neutralized at least two modules active in the country. Saturday’s raid is said to have busted a third module.

Karim was arrested on Saturday with Abdul Sattar alias Sheru, after the arrest of his delivery boys, Mohammad Sajid Zubair and Noushad Abdul Rahiman.

Zubair and Rahiman were nabbed from the Sarai Kale Khan area with 16kg heroin and 9 kg crude meth (methamphetamine). Another 5kg heroin was recovered from the possession of Karim and Sheru. The total value of the drug seized from the accused is estimated to be around Rs 100 crore, police said.

A senior police officer said the latest arrests were made in continuation with the earlier arrest of three men, including one Autar Singh, who was said to be the head of Punjab and Delhi module of the syndicate.

“They disclosed that their drug network was spread over India, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It was also revealed that their Mumbai-based module was active in trans-border smuggling of drug from Afghanistan,” said the officer.

On May 20, investigators learnt that two members of the Mumbai module, who had picked a huge consignment of drug from near Attari border in Punjab, would be arriving in Delhi on a bus on their way back to Mumbai.

Accordingly, a trap was laid at Sarai Kale Khan Bus depot and the two, Zubair and Rahiman, were nabbed with the drug consignment. Karim and Sheru were apprehended when they arrived in Delhi looking for their courier boys.
