A 32-year-old software engineer, who worked for a multinational company in Noida, was found dead with a TV cable wire around his neck in southwest Delhi's Dwarka early on Sunday morning.
Police said the man's wife was later found locked in a bedroom with multiple injuries on her head and other parts of her body. The man's mother, the third occupant of the flat, was found locked from outside in another bedroom in which the police had to enter through the balcony.
The couple - Amit Bachchan and Shivani Patni - had an arranged marriage after meeting each other through a matrimonial website two months ago.
While investigators are still trying to ascertain the sequence of events that led to the bizarre crime, a police officer privy to the probe said Amit allegedly hanged himself after brutally attacking his wife for "refusing to have sex with him". Shivani was attacked with a sharp weapon and a blunt object mostly, the police said.
A seriously injured Shivani, who was rescued by the police, has told investigators that she managed to save herself from death by pushing back her violent husband and locking herself up in the bedroom.
However, her in-laws suspect the involvement of a fourth person who might have been present in the house at the time of the crime.
Police discovered Amit's body lying on the floor when they reached the flat. The main door of the flat was locked from the inside.
Members of both Amit's and Shivani's families confirmed that the couple fought often ever since their marriage. It has been learnt that Shivani mostly lived with her parents, who stayed only a few blocks away from the flat in Platinum Heights Apartments in Dwarka's Sector 18.
Shivani's father Ashok Patni told police that on Saturday afternoon, Amit and Shivani went to Tilak Nagar market to purchase a sofa set.
While Shivani came to meet her parents, Amit went to his friend's place.
"Amit picked up Shivani from her parent's house in the night and after reaching home, he tried forcing her to have sex with him. She, however, refused, infuriating Amit who then attacked Shivani on her head with a blunt object and a sharp weapon. During the scuffle, Shivani somehow locked herself in the bedroom. Amit later hanged himself," a senior investigating officer said, quoting Ashok's statement.
"It was Shivani who called up the police. Our officers entered the flat through a balcony they found open. The incident is being probed from all possible angles," said Chinmoy Biswal, additional DCP (south-west).
Shivani is recuperating at a private hospital, he added.
