Delhi will get at least 47 new government schools over the next couple of years. While the expenditure and finance committee has already approved budget for 10 new schools, officials said there is a proposal for 27 more school buildings that is awaiting the expenditure and finance committee’s clearance.

The education department has also been allotted land for 10 more schools. It will soon send a request to the government for a budget to build the schools.

With Delhi implementing the Right to Education Act 2009 — which assures free education for all children up to the age of 14 years — education department officials said they need more schools to accommodate more students.

“We are making efforts to get land for more schools from the DDA and the Gram Sabha for more schools,” additional director Sunita Shukla Kaushik said. Delhi presently has 945 government schools, 215 aided and 1,259 private schools apart from 1,700 primary schools being run by the MCD.
