Delhi traffic cops to bring down road mishaps across cities

The traffic cops have been roped in to further bring down the alarming rate of road fatalities across the country with the help of Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Planning & Engineering Centre (UTTIPEC).
As part of a national campaign, the IRF, along with the Union ministry of surface transport, has been working towards bringing down road fatalities by 50% in the next two years. For this, the IRF has decided to emphasis on improvement of statewide traffic management.
According to the IRF, road accidents are bound to come down if proper engineering techniques are adopted in road construction and efficient traffic management is enforced.
"Charity begins at home. That is why we will start the process from Delhi, which registered maximum cases of road mortalities in the past few years. Road accidents are one of the largest killers in India with 1.25 lakh deaths per year," said KK Kapila, chairman, IRF.
The IRF will soon propose to the traffic department to make it mandatory to stick reflective tapes on commercial vehicles in a bid to avoid road mishaps caused due to vehicular collision, he said.
Improved traffic management and enforcement of strict norms helped Delhi register a decline in road mortalities in the Capital last year.
"During the Games as well, we have seen that the traffic police successfully met the challenge. It will be a good idea to work with them to reduce road accidents and bring down road fatalities further," said Kapila.
Satyender Garg, Joint CP (Traffic), who is also a member of UTTIPEC, welcomed the idea. "We would be happy to work with the IRF to bring down the figure further.
The IRF will also propose to intensify patrolling to reduce cases of drunk driving and overspeeding.
It will also ask the traffic department to make it mandatory to seize driving licenses of the norm violators.
