A joyride turned into tragedy for four friends on Thursday, when a 21-year-old lost his life after allegedly hitting his head on a tree as he leaned out of the car window. The incident took place in Chanakyapuri area of the Capital.
But what is more tragic is that instead of helping their injured friend or calling the police for help, the three occupants of the car left him to die and fled.
Police said all the four youths were allegedly under the influence of liquor and the inebriated driver of the Ford Ikon car had apparently lost control over the vehicle. The speeding car climbed onto the pavement. The driver somehow managed to prevent crashing the vehicle into a tree on the pavement but in the process his friend’s head and hand, which were out of the vehicle, smashed into the tree.
The three friends of the deceased, instead of rushing him to a hospital or informing the police immediately, parked the car near Garhwal Bhawan in Jhandewalan and fled after leaving the victim to die on the rear seat.
The 21-year-old deceased Ashu’s body was discovered around 4.30am — almost four hours after his death — by a security guard working at Garhwal Bhawan. According to security guard Kanhaiya Lal, the car was parked in the area since 1.30am.
Delhi Police’s tall claims of increased patrolling during the night also came under question after the incident as neither the beat staff nor the SHO of the Mandir Marg police station had any clue about the mysterious car which was lay parked for hours with visible blood spots on its body.
A senior police officer said they had detained Brajesh and Firoz, two friends of Ashu, who were present in the car when the accident took place in Chanakyapuri area. The errant driver of the car, identified as Shiv Shankar, is absconding.
During questioning, Brajesh and Firoz told police that all of them were friends who stayed at Chuna Mandi area in central Delhi in a rented accommodation. The four worked in a private company.
On Wednesday night, they had together consumed liquor at their flat and decided to go for a joyride in their Ford Ikon car. The accident occurred around 12.30am, the officer said.
