“This a baby step towards saving Mother Earth. Let us all switch off the lights for an hour today,” read the Facebook status message of Tenzin Metok, a first-year DU student.

Metok was not alone. RWAs, government buildings, cooperative housing societies and almost all major markets besides people from all walks chipped in by switching off non-essential lights between 8.30pm and 9.30pm to join the growing worldwide community as part of the Earth Hour campaign.

“We are duty bound. If we don’t do anything now, our children would suffer,” said Gulshan Rai from RWA Janakpuri in west Delhi, where around 35-40 per cent citizens switched off lights. However, some didn’t bother to switch off the lights and preferred watching the World Cup.
