Continuing their demolition drive, the North Delhi Corporation razed parts of Maidens Hotel located at 7 Sham Nath Marg in Civil Lines.

The exercise was stopped after a few hours as the officials claimed the hotel authorities managed to get a stay from the high court.

Twenty employees of the corporation's building department armed with four JCBs, gas-cutters and other tools on Friday conducted the demolition drive. They were accompanied by police personnel.

The drive had started at the hotel, established in 1903, on Thursday.

"Our staff was directed to complete the demolition work that had started on Thursday. Demolition continued in the front area of the hotel and in some of the rooms that had been constructed illegally," said a senior North Delhi Corporation official.

According to sources, the hotel management had illegally constructed the demolished portions over a period of time.

"During our inspection, we found the area where the construction was carried out used to be a tennis court," said an official. The civic agency claimed it had served a notice to the hotel before the demolition drive.
