While bracing itself for the storm likely to follow the release of state department papers, the US made one last attempt late Saturday telling WikiLeaks that the impending leak was against the law and that it could imperil lives.

But the papers are already out. All but one are dated 2004 and after – the only exception goes back to 1966 – and there are over 9000 documents from this year, according to a news organisation which has them.

The US has been in touch with key allies and countries – including India – with heads up on the leaks in an attempt to deal with potentially damaging details contained in the leaked documents.

“We have been in touch with India,” state department spokesperson PJ Crowley said. When asked if some of the leaked documents could be about India, he added, “We cannot say what Wikileaks will release.”

But Der Spiegel, a German daily put online some basic details of the size and nature of the coming leaks calling them “The Embassy Files”.
Here are some numbers and details leaked by Der Spiegel.

l 15,652 documents are classified ’Secret’- none 'Top Secret
