Delhi’s power distribution company BSES’s anti-power theft campaign that started in January this year created a new record by exposing pilferage of 34,000 KW load in south and west Delhi areas.

Conducting 180 raids in 90 days, BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) has also lodged 4,840 cases — 3,477 in west Delhi and 1363 in south Delhi.

“The raids unearthed power theft of various types effectively,” said a spokesperson of BRPL. Officials say, the massive crackdown has unearthed nearly 22,000 KW of power theft in west Delhi and 12,700 KW in south Delhi.

During the raids it was found that maximum power theft took place through meter-tampering. In west Delhi, of the 22,000 KW theft load, meter tampering accounted for nearly 19,000 KW and direct theft for nearly 2,260 KW.

In south Delhi, of 12,700 KW theft load, meter-tampering accounted for 10,600 KW of theft while direct theft for 2100 KW, said officials. In west Delhi, maximum power theft cases—1,061—were found in Nangloi division, followed by Janakpuri (564) and Mundka (415). In south Delhi, Nizamuddin topped the list with 195 cases, followed by Sarita Vihar (190) and Alaknanda (181).
