Om Prakash Singh (70) cannot believe his son is no more.

"He was right here till 10 pm on Sunday night," Om Prakash, a resident of Karawal Nagar in northeast Delhi, said.

His son, Bhagat Singh (22), was killed in a water dispute in the neighbouring Govind Vihar around midnight on Sunday.

Ironically, Bhagat Singh had nothing to do with the dispute.

The incident occurred when two residents of Govind Nagar, Vijender Singh Chowdhury and Vijender Sharma, got into a fight over a common tap that had been sealed by the DJB.

When things got out of hand, both called up friends and relatives.

Singh's neighbour, Ompal was Chowdhury's relative.

"The dispute turned ugly and Sharma opened fire at Ompal. Singh tried to save him and got shot," said a senior police officer.

Ompal has been admitted to GTB Hospital and is reported to be in a critical condition.

According to the family, Bhagat Singh's body was dumped at the Karawal Nagar Chowk at 11:30pm on Sunday.

"We saw a red Santro car dump Singh’s body at the Chowk. Chowdhury has a similar car. We went to Govind Vihar last night but Chowdhury's house was locked," said eyewitness Manoj Singh.

"My son was not friendly with Chowdhury and didn't even know Sharma. We don't know why he was killed," he added.

Bhagat Singh's family says, he left home at 10 pm on Sunday.

"He did not tell us before leaving. He, in all probability, joined Ompal and went to Govind Vihar," said Om Prakash.
