The festive spirit might be high with Diwali round the corner, but it has brought in a host of problems to the city that reeled under massive traffic jams.
Thanks to heavy rush in markets, massive traffic jams hit various areas of the city on Wednesday afternoon. Traffic was brought to a standstill as people were caught in jams for hours.
The Delhi Traffic Police said the pre-Diwali shopping rush is the main reason behind the jam.
“We believe there were jams in various market areas as more and more people are venturing. The situation would remain the same for the next few days. However, we have made arrangements to tackle the situation,” said Ajay Chadha, special commissioner of police (traffic).
Meanwhile, a low-floor bus caught fire at Pul Bangash, leading to further jams. According to the police, the DTC’s low-floor bus caught fire around 10am. Smoke started coming out from the rear tyre of the bus after which the driver evacuated all the commuters. The fire department was called in to bring the situation under control.
However, people were stuck in a jam following this incident for more than three hours. Various other areas in the city witnessed traffic jams that lasted for hours.
