The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has started fining residents for wasting water, starting with south Delhi.

If you live in an area with a healthy water supply, say, twice a day, then the DJB will be on the lookout for those who leave the water motor on to overflow the overhead tanks for hours.

The DJB is using Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs) as its eyes and ears to keep a tab on this offence. “We rely on complaints from RWAs,” said Ramesh Negi, DJB CEO.

In the past month, the board has fined 25 residents from Vasant Kunj and Sarita Vihar.

Based on the amount of water wasted, the fine ranges from Rs 200 to Rs 10,000.DJB has collected Rs 16 lakh by imposing penalty so far.
