Some of our fellow Delhiites will continue to work on Diwali while we celebrate the festival by spending time with our families, exchanging warm wishes and bursting crackers. Among this selfless group of people are doctors, nurses and paramedics who forgo their bits of happiness and offer their services to others.
“This is our duty and we cannot shy away from it. As doctors, we can’t have any complaints,” said a senior resident at Safdarjung Hospital.
Most of the hospitals in the city, government and private both, have special emergency care arrangements to handle victims with burns over the weekend when their number is expected to increase.
“We are expecting about 250-300 patients in the burns unit during the season. Most of the injuries are unlikely to be serious but if there is anything life threatening then we’ll definitely admit them. We have sufficient number of doctors and beds to handle the situation,” said Dr BD Athani, medical superintendent at New Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital that has the largest burns unit in the country.
A out-patient department will function all day at the hospital during the festival season.
According to a senior doctor at the hospital, around 35 residents and senior residents will be working round the clock to provide medical care to patients. “There are about 65 beds in the burns emergency ward, of which 30-35 beds are reserved for emergency cases,” said the doctor.
Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital also has a busy burns unit during Diwali with around 60-100 burns cases coming every year owing to fire crackers.
“We have special arrangement for burns cases during Diwali. We have enhanced the number of doctors, apparatus, ventilators and beds to deal with burns and emergency cases. About 10-15 doctors will work for 24 hours a day before and till the day after Diwali,” said Dr HK Kar, medical superintendent at RML Hospital.
The Delhi government has instructed its hospitals to take immediate care of patients with burns during Diwali. The hospitals have been asked to keep a few beds reserved for such cases apart from deploying specialists.
