A 51-year-old doctor was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting one of his employees and cheating her of over Rs 34 lakh over four years at a clinic in central Delhi, police said on Tuesday.
Dr Ashok Danir was arrested from his clinic - the Delhi Diagnostic Centre, located at Patel Nagar's A Block. The arrest came soon after the victim, a nurse at the clinic, complained to the police on Monday.
"The victim, in her complaint, has claimed that Danir began sexually assaulting her almost immediately after appointing her in early 2008. She claimed that he had extorted and subsequently duped her of over Rs 34 lakh during the same period," said a senior police officer.
According to police, the accused used to assault her daily and used the amount he owed her as an excuse to prolong her employment at the clinic. He had threatened her with dire consequences against revealing details about the abuse to anyone.
Trapped, both physically and professionally, the victim has stated in her complaint, she had had no alternative but to give in to the abuse.
"She approached the Patel Nagar police station with a written complaint against the doctor yesterday. One team, headed by a woman officer, was sent with her for a medical examination while another was sent to nab the doctor," said the officer.
A medical examination was conducted at the Lady Hardinge Hospital which confirmed that the victim had been subjected to sexual assault and a case of rape was registered. The doctor was produced at a city court on Tuesday and was sent to a day's judicial custody.
