Two nursing homes in east Delhi have been sealed for illegal sex-determination tests and offering to abort girl foetus.
In two separate undercover investigations, an NGO working closely with government agencies caught Delhi doctors in two separate nursing homes on secret camera offering to arrange for termination of pregnancies of girl children.
Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) director Kal Singh, with the chief district medical officer Dr R.N. Garia sealed the clinics — Raja Nursing Home on Tuesday and Abhilasha maternity and medical clinic on Wednesday, both in Mayur Vihar, Phase II.
The NGO decided to conduct investigations after receiving several complaints of indiscriminate female foeticide in these nursing homes. NGO Beti Bachao Samiti sent a decoy patient to doctors asking them to abort the foetus.
Revealing its findings, the NGO’s secretary Subhash Kumar Sharma said: “In the first case, Dr Prashansa Grewal at Raja Nursing Home told the patient to come on Thursday at 4 a.m. She said the surgery would be done in a matter of few hours.”
In a video recording, the doctor is also seen accepting Rs 500 in advance. “She had asked for Rs 4,000 for the procedure, so the patient promised to pay the remaining Rs 3, 500 on the day of the surgery.”
“We found several irregularities with the data collection records for Form F, which is an important tool of the PNDT Act, 1994,” Singh said. According to provisions of the PNDT Act, the nursing home has to maintain records of name, address and several health details.
The NGO conducted a similar investigation at Abhilasha and saw similar findings.
