An analysis of financial contributions received by six national parties reveals that the BJP has had the most and the Congress is well behind on number three. The BSP comes in at number two.

In the financial years 2007-08 and 2008-09, the BJP got R297, the BSP R202 crore and the Congress a relatively small R72 crore.

Among the contributing corporate houses, Bharati Electoral Trust of Bharati Group made maximum contribution of R17 crore through five donations, three to BJP and two to Congress. Just before general elections, Bharati donated R10 crore to the Congress and R6 crore to the BJP.

Another major contributor was Gujarat based Torrent Power Limited, which gave the Congress R9 crore and R1crore to Nationalist Congress Party.

For the BJP, the biggest corporate contributor was Aditya Birla Group’s General Electoral Trust, which donated R6.51 crore. It also received a substantial amount of contributions from Videocon Industries limited and an individual Popatbhai Ukabhai Vekaria. BJP also received money from liquor companies and small companies across India.

Unlike other parties, the BSP did not receive any contribution from corporate houses. Interestingly, the Bahujan Samaj Party — did not receive even a single contribution of more than R20,000. For any contribution of more than R20,000 to a registered political party, the donor can seek income tax rebate. If that happens, the Income Tax department can analyse the sources of the contributions.

An NGO, Association for Democratic Rights released analysis of contributions.

Other national political parties did not receive substantial funding from corporate houses. Biggest contribution for National Congress Party was of

R1 crore made by Videocon Industries and for Samajwadi Party of R10 lakh by Greater Noida based Honda Sea Cars Limited.
