A 27-year-old woman was found dead at her in-laws’ residence under mysterious circumstances in northeast Delhi.

Sangeeta Dinesh was found dead with injury marks by her parents on Saturday evening. They claimed she was tortured for not giving dowry.

Sangeeta’s husband Todarmal Dinesh, his uncle Prem Dinesh and widowed sister-in-law Madhu are allegedly absconding.

According to police, Sangeeta’s father Prakash Kumar called the police on Saturday evening. In his complaint he said his daughter was found dead under the staircase when he came to visit her. He had come to sort out a demand for dowry made by Dinesh, who works in a medical store. Kumar told the police his daughter called on the night of July 24 and said her husband was demanding Rs 5 lakh to set up a medical store. She said Dinesh threatened to kill her if she did not get the money, he alleged. Her parents said they would visit her in the morning.

On July 25, Dinesh called his in-laws and said Sangeeta had fled. Kumar rushed to his daughter’s Harsh Vihar house and found her dead. After initial investigations, police have registered a case of dowry death against her in-laws.

Deputy commissioner (Northeast) SS Yadav said: “We will take further action after the parents of the deceased give a statement in front of the magistrate.”
