Politician and academic. Currently health minister, till a few years back he was a reader at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College where he taught Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology. Two years ago, he took voluntary retirement. He also authored a book "Prachin Bharat Mein Yadhey Ganrajya."
Education: MA from Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidhyala, Haridwar. PhD from Kurukshetra University.
Political career: Joined Congress during student days. Contested and won Assembly polls for first time in 1993. Won again in 1998 and 2003 and held several portfolios both times.
Family: Wife Damyanti Shastri is a reader in Hindi at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College. Has two daughters, both married. Son Aniruddh works in real estate consultancy CB Richard Ellis. During his spare time, Shastri reads books on ancient history. Even now, history students come to him.
Cars: Shastri travels in his white Ambassador, which he gets in his official capacity as the health minister. His son drives a Maruti SX4.
