After finding the involvement of Nigerian nationals in a case of robbery-cum-murder in Uttam Nagar area, the west district police have started a drive to deport foreigners living illegally in the Capital.

To identify them, the Delhi Police are taking help of property dealers who provide rented accommodation to foreigners, especially from the African continent.

“Not all property dealers arrange accommodation for people of African-origin and we have identified those who do. We have taken a list from them and are checking documents of such foreigners. If they are found living illegally, they will be sent to Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO),” said V Renganathan, additional CP (west) said.

In one week, 29 Nigerians have been deported.

Police are also carrying out random checking at places where Africans are staying.

After a Nigerian was arrested for killing his girlfriend in Uttam Nagar area, the crime branch of the Delhi Police has written to all city districts and to the Nigerain embassy.

“We have written to district DCPs to check visas of Nigerians living in their area. They have been asked to take action against such persons,” a crime branch officer said.

This year, five Nigerians have been apprehended in murder cases. Against 47 arrests in the first eight months of 2010, Delhi Police have arrested 65 Africans during the same period this year for various crimes.
