Drive to list elderly with police begins today

The Delhi Police will start a drive to identify senior citizens in various parts of the Capital from Sunday. The police, in an effort to reach out to the senior citizens in the city, will do a door-to-door survey and register them with their Senior Citizens’ Cell.

The focus this time is more on those who live alone. Recently, there has been a spate of attacks on senior citizens. In 2008, there have been as many as 13 senior citizens’ murder and six robbery bids.

The police believe that if the senior citizens register themselves with the cell keeping a check on them and providing them security is much easier.

“The door-to-door survey will start from Sunday. Maximum police personnel from every station would be assigned this task. The drive will continue till the time we get satisfactory results,” said Rajan Bhagat, Delhi Police spokesperson.
Delhi Police have more 7, 556 people registered with the cell.

During this drive the police will also check houses for servant verification. Any resident who has not verified their servants would be asked to do so.

But the residents welfare associations are skeptical about the drive. “Such drives have not helped in the past. They have manpower problems. But if the police do come to us for help, we will assist them,” said P.K. Roy, secretary, CR Park EPDP Association.
