Three men, including a driver, were arrested for allegedly assaulting and robbing an elderly couple at their south-east Delhi home earlier this month, police said on Thursday.
The men have been identified as Vikas Kumar, 33, the couple's driver and his associates Sunny, 22 and Rahul, 27. All of them are residents of Badarpur. The trio was arrested from Sarai Kale Khan on Tuesday, said Ajay Chaudhry, additional commissioner of police (southeast).
"On March 5, two people, masquerading as drivers looking for employment, had barged into the Kalkaji residence of Kanwalninder Singh Lamba, 71, and his wife Kulwant Kaur, 67, around 9:00 am," said Chaudhry.
According to police, after having gained access, the duo had assaulted the couple, threatened them with knives and then ransacked the house before fleeing with more than Rs 22 lakh in cash and diamond and gold jewellery of Rs 8 lakh. Lamba, who manufactures trophies for a living, holds several world records.
During investigation, police claimed to have questioned more than 20 people including drivers, servants and maids working in the vicinity. After examining everyone, a police team questioned Vikas, who had been working as a driver with the couple for a month.
"After his initial interrogation, Vikas fled and was nabbed on Tuesday. During subsequent interrogation, he admitted to have masterminded the robbery. Rahul and Sunny were picked up based on a tip-off," Chaudhry said. According to police, Vikas, who knew that Lamba kept cash in the house decided to target them because both their unmarried sons were away.
