It was a horrifying Monday afternoon for many parents when a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) garbage truck went berserk and hit as many as six cars.
The incident happened right outside Modern School, Vasant Vihar when the school had just got over for the day.
The students' parents claimed that the police took a long time to reach the spot and register a complaint.
Randhir Kashyap (64) whose six-year-old granddaughter studies in the school said, "My granddaughter was in our Santro car with the driver when the garbage truck came charging towards it. It hit the car and badly damaged it. Thankfully she was not hurt in the accident."
According to police, the incident happened at around 1.30pm. The truck driver lost control of the vehicle and drove towards the parked cars. The cars belonged to the parents of the children studying in the school. It hit six cars in the way as well as the school bus.
According to bystanders the driver then fled from the spot. "We kept calling the police and the helpline number of the garbage dump. But no one came for close to an hour. It almost took us four hours to get our case registered," added Kashyap.
The garbage truck belongs to a private company that is working under MCD and collects garbage from every house individually.
Parents alleged that the manager of the private company came after a long time and refused to divulge any information about the driver.
The case was registered only after the parents raised hue and cry about the incident. The police said that they have identified the driver and would arrest him soon. No injuries were reported from the incident, the police said.
