An 80-year-old woman paid with her life in Outer Delhi after she refused to give in to the demands of her drunkard son to sell their house.
The accused Somnath, 40, allegedly strangled his mother Amar Devi with his hands and smashed her head against the floor in Mangolpuri on Thursday. “Somnath has been arrested,” said Chhaya Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer).
The incident was reported when Sanjay Gandhi Hospital officials informed the police. The victim’s daughter, Surjeet Kaur, admitted her in an injured condition. During treatment, she succumbed to injuries.
Kaur told the police that Devi was living with her son Somnath, a part-time driver. “He is a drunkard. Due to his bad habit his wife had left him and his son is being looked after by his sister,” Sharma said.
Kaur said his brother used to quarrel and had been forcing her mother to sell her house. “Somnath’s elder brother Kishan Lal had also left the house two years ago due to his alcoholism,” Sharma added.
The police said that Amar Devi has already transferred the ownership of property in the name of her grandson Gautam, Somnath’s son.
Neighbours told police that Somnath had been insisting on selling the house. During interrogation Somnath told the police that since he had no work to fulfil his requirements of money, he decided to sell his old house but his mother was objecting for the same.
