Women passengers in public buses will no more have to point towards the ‘ladies’ sticker to make men vacate seats reserved for them.

All new Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses will soon have seats reserved for women painted in pink. The Delhi transport minister Ramakant Goswami said changes have been made in the specifications for public buses and all new buses, including cluster and feeder buses, will have women seats painted in pink colour.

Pink seats will first be seen in the 625 semi-low floor buses that the DTC is likely to add to its fleet by the end of this year. DTC officials said tenders have already been called for these buses.

Goswami said the need for changing the colour of women seats was felt after the transport department increased the number of seats reserved for women in public buses.

“Earlier, only the left row of the bus used to have reserved seats for women. With increased number of reserved seats, even the row of seats on the right side has seats for women. We have put stickers in the existing fleet but new buses will have pink-coloured seats for easy identification,” Goswami said.

The transport department recently amended the permit conditions for public transit buses and reserved 25% seats for women. While 35-seat low floor DTC buses earlier had six seats for women, the 42-seater standard-floor cluster buses had 8. The number has now gone up to 9 and 11 respectively. Apart from women seats, there are two more seats reserved, one each for senior citizens and the disabled.

Apart from pink seats, new DTC buses will also come with in-built global positioning system (GPS) devices, space to install web-cameras or closed circuit television cameras, alarm system to warn passengers and bus crew in case of fire in the bus. A system that will disconnect CNG supply to the engine incase of fire will also be installed.
