Delhi University (DU) is just four days away from welcoming new students.
This time, however, the University is fully equipped to make sure that this entry is made as smooth as possible, free of any incidents of ragging both inside hostels and in the college campus. Colleges have upped their ante this year, following complaints from students over the last few years.
"Two years ago, we expelled two students after some juniors complained against them for having indulged in ragging. Thereafter, any form of ragging inside hostels or the college campus came to a complete stop," said Bhimsen Singh, Principal, Kirori Mal College.
Some students, who had taken up hostel accommodation in DU in the last academic year (2010-11), however, feel that incidents of ragging go unreported because of the fear that senior students create among the juniors.
"Even if students wished to file a complaint, the seniors threatened the juniors with dire consequences if any such complaint was forwarded to the college authorities. So, no one had the courage to take the matter forward," said Karan Arora (name changed), a resident at the Hindu College Hostel.
University authorities have also admitted to having received complaints of ragging from students over the last year.
"Last year, two complaints were registered from north and south campus colleges. These complaints are usually reported at the central helpline number, which is then directed to the UGC and then to the concerned college authorities, who take action against the student by registering an FIR," said HP Singh, Proctor, Delhi University.
While authorities maintain that students still face ragging in college and hostel campuses, they also claim that cases of ragging have decreased over the last six years.
Yet they are being cautious and ensuring that registering a complaint can be made simple.
"We are meeting Delhi Police officials on July 18 regarding this issue. All hostel wardens have been instructed to take the necessary steps to minimise ragging within hostels. Each college campus and hostel will also have a complaint box and a student can avail services of the central helpline number to file a complaint," added Singh.
