Dusshera celebrations turned ugly as two groups clashed in Pratap Nagar near Gulabi Bagh in North Delhi on Sunday night.

The violence was triggered after a teenager riding a motorcycle hit a man, who in turn beat up the boy.

Fourteen-year-old Sajan Ahuja’s father Deepak Ahuja, who rushed to his son’s rescue, was also beaten up by a mob and was critically injured.

A mob from two different communities gathered and clashed after the incident.

The police said that a violent crowd of about 600-700 people gathered at around 10.30 p.m. Eight people, including a police officer, were injured in the clashes that followed.

The police said that the groups pelted stones at each other. Amid all the violence a woman was also reportedly molested.

The police had to fire tear gas shells and a mild charge to rein in the mob.

“The mob got violent that we had to use force to control them,” said a senior police officer.

Policemen from Gulabi Bagh, Sabzi Mandi and Sarhai Rohilla police stations were brought in to control the mob.

The police have arrested seven people for indulging in violence under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rioting and are carrying out further investigations to identify other people involved in the violence.
