After a spate of burglaries rocked apartments in Mayur Vihar in east Delhi, the residents have decided to install CCTV cameras to keep a check on such incidents.

Recently, burglars broke into four houses of Samachar Apartment, after which the residents decided to install cameras for their safety.

“The incidents of burglaries have increased in recent past and the burglars are targetting unoccupied house. The incidents are not limited to Samachar Apartments but the nearby apartments have also been targetted by burglars,” NP Radhakrishnan, president of Samachar Apartment residents welfare association said.

After the incident residents pooled in money and installed seven cameras at strategic locations.“On Friday evening, we caught a minor roaming inside the apartment complex without making an entry at the gate. We handed him over to the police,” he added.

According to the residents, they are suspecting an insider’s role as the burglars are targetting houses whose owners are out of town. A veteran journalist VM Badola’s house was burgled on October 20 when he was out of town. A total of Rs 50,000, including cash and gold jewellery, was stolen from his house.

Residents have also put barbwire along the boundary wall and sealing unoccupied flats.“We are doing our best to prevent incidents of burglaries in apartment complex,” Prabhakar, DCP (east) said.
