All schools under the Delhi Directorate of Education’s (DOE) control will have to display prominently the total number of seats available in the economically weaker section (EWS) quota and the number of vacant seats.

According to an order issued by the DOE, the information will have to be displayed on a board that is easily visible from outside the school gates.

The schools will have to display information about the total number of seats in all classes, the total number of vacant seats, the total EWS category seats, the vacant EWS category seats and the number of applications received under the EWS quota.

The move is aimed at increasing transparency and giving information to parents.

The order was passed by the Central Information Commission in 2010 but was stayed by the Delhi High Court after a group of schools went to court against it. The court has now cleared the way for the order to be implemented.

“We had been asking schools to display the information for quite some time now. The court has also cleared the way. It is a way to increase and ensure transparency, especially regarding admissions under the EWS category,” said education director Amit Singla.
