A senior citizen couple, both aged around 75 years, were found murdered at their four-storey residence in east Delhi on Tuesday evening, police said.
The victim was a retired deputy director with the Information and Broadcasting (IB) Ministry.
Police said the incident was discovered when RK Bararu and Durga Devi’s maid reached their ransacked, first-floor house in Shakarpur’s B block at 7pm. Three other floors of the building are occupied by tenants.
“There were bloodspots all over the floor, which she followed to the couple’s bedroom where she found Bararu lying dead on the bed.
His wife was found slumped on the floor in the adjacent toilet,” said a senior police officer.
As the entry to the house was friendly, police said the gang of three to four assailants, who perpetuated the crime, were probably known to the couple.
While Bararu, a noted playwright and theatre personality who retired from the song and drama division of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry in 1999, seemed to have succumbed to excessive bleeding after a fatal injury to his head, the reason behind his wife’s death is yet to be ascertained.
“The entire house seems to have been ransacked by the people who did this.
My parents had been living here since 1974 and had built it from bottom-up over the years,” said a bereaved Jaikishan, their eldest son, who stays in Noida.
A case of murder has been registered at the Shakarpur police station and investigations are underway.
