Elderly couple loses valuables

delhi Updated: Dec 29, 2010 00:24 IST

Dense fog not only disrupted the travel schedule of an elderly couple, but also ensured that they lose their valuables. Hansraj Digra and his wife Sampuran Digra, residents of Gurdaspur in Punjab, had boarded an Air China flight from San Francisco, USA. When the flight reached the Indira Gandhi International Airport two days after its departure from USA, they were unable to claim their baggage at the airport.

The airlines informed them that it would be couriered to them.

On Tuesday, seven days after their scheduled flight, they finally got the baggage delivered at their doorstep. They were, however, shocked to find that the seals and tags were broken and expensive items, including a mobile phones, digital camera and their branded clothes, had been stolen.

“The bags that weighed 20 kg during the time of check-in are now weighing 10 kg. Almost all new clothes such as sweaters and jerseys are missing. The bags have been soiled and none of the locks are there,” said Sandeep Digra, the couple’s son who lives in San Francisco. They had gone to meet their son in the US.

The elderly couple had boarded an Air China flight from San Francisco on December 21.

“My parents had a horrible experience. First, their flight was changed without informing them. Then the flight was cancelled. They were supposed to reach New Delhi on December 21. They had to spend two days in China and now their baggage has been stolen,” said Sandeep.

Sandeep added that when he contacted the airline’s office in Delhi they refused to take any responsibility. He said he has lodged a complaint with the IGIA police station and is awaiting a response from the police. Repeated calls to Air China’s office did not elicit any response.
