A 72-year-old woman was attacked and robbed at her house in Safdarjung Enclave of south Delhi on Wednesday. An unidentified man entered the house on the pretext of drinking water and robbed her, police said. The woman lay unconscious for two hours till her brother came calling, the police said. Rama Nath stayed alone at her house.
“We were worried about her security so she used to sleep at my brother’s house. We never knew that despite being so cautious an incident like this could happen,” said GK Khurana, one of the woman’s brothers.
Around 7 pm, a man in his early twenties rang the doorbell of the house.“The man identified himself as the son of one Jile Singh, a local vegetable vendor, and asked for some water. As Nath knew Singh, she opened the door,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.
Police said when Nath went to the kitchen to fetch water , the man attacked her from behind and tried to strangle her with a polythene bag. When she resisted, the man slit her throat with the kitchen knife, the police said. He then fled with her cellphone and gold jewellery.
When Nath did not turn up for the night, her brother PP Khurana called at her place.
“Nath was lying in the kitchen with a polythene bag wrapped around her neck. She was bleeding and had strangulation marks on her neck. She was unconscious,” said the officer.
The woman was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where her condition was said to be critical.
