The Delhi election office has decided to go the extra mile to ensure all eligible college-goers find a place in the voters’ list. Authorities want to ensure 100% enrolment of youngsters this time round.

Special counters have been set up in the Delhi University and affiliated colleges to help students fill up forms to add their names in the voters’ list. Representatives from the election office are giving out forms to all students and are helping them fill it too. Not only this, completed forms are also being accepted by them and will be submitted in the election office on behalf of students.

The representatives are also keeping track of those students who are taking Form 6 from them but not submitting it. "We always ask for their contact numbers and in case they fail to submit it, we call them up and remind them about it," said a representative stationed at Gargi College on Wednesday.

"We want to ensure that all students who are eligible are added to the voters’ list. We have stationed our representatives in all the colleges to ensure that the maximum number of students are added to the list," said JK Sharma, joint electoral officer. Students, too, have welcomed the move, as many do not get time to visit their zonal electoral office.

Municipal elections will be held in April 2012, for which the process of issuing voter identification cards will start from January.

"It is a good move on the government's part, as it is examination time and we hardly get time to go to the election office. It will help youngsters participate in elections," said Sangeeta Singh, a second year student.

Also, with nearly one lakh students in government schools eligible for enrolment, the authorities have empowered the principals to identify such students and get their forms completed.
