Where is reining in drunk driving on the Delhi Police’s priority list ?
It is certainly a big problem — especially for those who are victimised in such accidents and even their families. While the former are usually left with life-changing debilities that put the future at stake, their families are left watching helpless as their loved ones suffer just because one road user decided to let his guard down.

How do you plan to tackle it?
We are concentrating on catching drinkers where they are most likely to get caught — outside pubs and discos. More and more people are being challaned on a daily basis. Regulation includes not only enforcing the law but also moral education.

Isn’t that moral policing?
Don’t confuse this with moral policing — we are not asking them to stop drinking. We just don’t want them to drive after they do so. And it not so much about policing behaviour as it is about spreading awareness about social deviance. So, we have started advertising against drunk driving around Khan Market where many watering holes are located. These will be seen in the entire city.

Don’t you think the law needs to be amended to make it a better deterrent?
As an enforcer of the law, it is my duty to enforce the law that is in existence. I will welcome any changes that are made to the law, but enforcing an enacted law is as far as my mandate extends.
