An engagement party in southwest Delhi’s Baba Haridas Nagar turned tragic after a 23-year-old man was shot dead, allegedly by a drunk guest, during celebratory firing late on Sunday.
An engagement party in southwest Delhi’s Baba Haridas Nagar turned tragic after a 23-year-old man was shot dead, allegedly by a drunk guest, during celebratory firing late on Sunday.
Pankaj Kumar, a resident of Dharampura village near Najafgarh, was at the Ganga Garden banquet hall on Khera Road near Najafgarh to attend his cousin Mohit’s engagement when he was shot around 10pm. Mohit and his fiancée were on stage with Pankaj at the time of the incident.
Police said the person who fired the shot that killed Pankaj was known to his family and has been identified. He was already drunk when came to the party with five of his friends. All of them fled soon after the incident, a police officer said.
“We have identified the accused and his five friends and are making efforts to arrest them. They have been booked for murder and offences under the Arms Act,” the officer added.
“Their interrogation will help us clear the air on whether the death was accidental or planned,” the officer said.
The police were informed about the incident almost an hour after the incident by Pankaj’s family. They had by then taken him to the Rao Tula Ram Hospital.
“Policemen reached the hospital and learnt that Pankaj had died by the time he was brought to the hospital,” the senior officer said.
