European cineaste showcase in Delhi

24 films from European countries will explore varied genres ranging from comedy of the absurd to gripping drama and unexpected romance to thrilling action. For the first time, a second screening of these films will be organised by the Directorate of Film Festivals.

While serving his sentence for murdering a girl, Jack, the protagonist, channels his energy in writing poems. After 15 years, he becomes a star in Vienna. But can he silence the devil inside him?

This Austrian film — Jack is one of the many intriguing tales from the European world, all set to give a dose of fine cinema to the Delhiites. The 21st edition of the European Union Film Festival will have screenings of 24 films from 24 European countries this year.The films explore varied genres — from comedy to absrd drama and from unexpected romance to thrilling action. The opening film Coriolanus (UK) is based on the Shakespearean tragedy. Among other films to be screened will be the tales of José — a football agent in the movie Les Rayures du Zèbre (Scouting for Zebras; Belgium), Dimitris — a telecommunications engineer in the film Wild Duck (Greece), and Zbigniew Religa — a cardiac surgeon in Bogowie (Gods; Poland).

“We try to bring movies which have been released in recent years and have been awarded with national or international awards that guarantees interest of the audience,” says Cesare Onestini, deputy head, Delegation of the European Union to India. He informs that this is the first time they have collaborated with the Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. “The officials have seen all the films and will organise a second screening of them at the Siri Fort Auditorium at the end of July. So, along with the audience who visit cultural centres, younger audience who like movies will also get to see these films,” he says.

The festival will take place in 11 cities of India this year. So, are the movie buffs all ears?
