A retired colonel was arrested for killing a stray puppy in Sector 36. Police took action after an FIR was lodged by an animal rights activist. Kapil Datta reports.

"Sumedha Aiyyar, a Delhi resident and member of People for Animals, lodged a complaint at Sector 39 police station on Friday. She stated that Sector 36 resident Col (retired) CL Bhasin on Thursday killed a puppy by mercilessly thrashing it on the ground. When the puppy died, he threw it in the drain," RK Singh, SHO, Sector 39, said.

"She further alleged that when his neighbour protested, he threatened to physically assault her. Then, the woman called a People for Animals representative; she reached Noida and inquired about the matter. She said that even the activist was threatened by the accused when she went to know why he killed the dog. She said investigation revealed that Bhasin had injured three more dogs in the past who were roaming outside his house," Singh added.

"Bhasin has been booked under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and IPC section 428 and 429."

"The accused denied the allegations despite corroboration by his neighbours and other witnesses. The puppy's body was recovered from the drain and sent for post mortem."
