A 56-year-old ex-corporator from Maharashtra was crushed to death on a wooden stage being erected for a function at the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee's (OC) office.
“Shambu Nayak was here to meet Suresh Kalmadi when the incident took place,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.
“Nayak was standing at the reception after being denied permission to meet Kalmadi. Suddenly, the stage collapsed and with it an aluminium pillar came crashing down upon Nayak,” the officer said.
Police said the incident was reported from the OC's Jantar Mantar office at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. Nayak was rushed to RML Hospital where he was pronounced brought dead on arrival. “The stage was being erected for Friday's function for the ceremonial launch of tickets for the Games in October,” said a senior OC official.
A case of death due to negligence has been registered. The Organising Committee said an inquiry had been ordered against the event management agency.
