Anadi Mishra, a resident of Safdarjung Enclave in Delhi, parked his car near the railway crossing at Sahibabad railway station late Tuesday night, which was later hit by an approaching Delhi-bound 2311 Kalka Mail.
"A major mishap was averted as the car was completely crushed and dragged for almost a kilometre till the Brij Vihar area," RPF Sub-Inspector Vishwamitra Singh said.
Mishra, who was stated to be under the influence of alcohol, was returning to Delhi, somehow managed to get his car near the railway tracks.
"The accused was immediately arrested and booked under section 153 of the Railway Act," Singh said.
The section of the Railway Act was non-bailable and could involve a sentence up to five years, officials said.
"The accused was later produced before a Railway-magistrate and was remanded to judicial custody," the Northern Railway spokesperson at Delhi said.
