The officials and experts endorse HT's suggestion on transforming hospitals. Here is what they have to say.
'Hospitals should get accredition'
-- Naresh Dayal, Health secretary
Governments should look at getting their hospitals accredited through an established healthcare and quality management agency.
Some hospitals, like Doon in Dehradun, have got ISO certification. A Delhi hospital also got NABH accreditation awarded by the Quality Council of India two years ago and I hear several others have applied for it.
We at the Union Health Ministry also have Indian Public Health Standards, where we expect hospitals to guarantee quality patient services. We are working towards updating the standards and we are also looking at providing all kinds of physical, monetary and staff assistance to all hospitals wanting to upgrade their facilities.
'NABH should get more teeth'
-- Dr Devi Shetty, chairperson, Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bangalore
The government should insist on a National Accreditation Board for Hospital and Healthcare Providers (NABH) accreditation. And the NABH should be given more teeth.
NABH has very strict guidelines as far as quality control in hospitals goes. If all hospitals were to follow these norms, there would be absolutely no problem of hospital-acquired infections or delayed treatment.
'Outsourcing was the first step'
-- Dr K K Kalra, medical superintendent, Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya
We had to really work hard to get the accreditation from National Accreditation Board for Hospital and Healthcare Providers (NABH). To start with, I outsourced as many support services as possible - security, data collection, sanitary services etc.
Then, we had to get several licenses from various agencies - fire, water, safety, building etc. We had never bothered to look into that earlier. Our neo-natal ICU facility is now one of the best in the country.
We maintain the nurse-to-child ratio, the distance between beds, special lights and round-the-clock specialists. Unlike most government hospitals in the country, we are also following all processes for segregation and proper disposal for biomedical waste.
