An unplanned visit by a family friend to see whether the Thakurs' flat was still sealed proved a blessing in disguise for Chandra Thakur.
The 57-year-old teacher who tried to commit suicide outside her flat was found lying unconscious by Nisar, a family friend.
According to a senior police officer, the victim, while being given preliminary treatment at AIIMS, had told doctors that she took the extreme step because of financial crisis.
Both Chandra and her husband Surender Singh Thakur were jobless for more than two years and hence they were finding it difficult to meet day-to-day expenses, the senior officer said.
He added that neighbours said the couple had some dispute with people living on other floors.
"A note written by her on the outer wall of her flat suggests that she was emotionally attached to the house that was sealed by the MCD around two years ago over illegal construction," the officer added.
The Thakurs presently live in a rented flat in Mehrauli. While their daughter is settled in the UK, their son lives in Australia.
